Snape’s Worst Memory: What Happens in the Chapter

“Snape’s Worst Memory” is Chapter 28 of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. During one of his Occlumency lessons, Harry looks into Snape’s Pensieve and sees a memory from Snape’s fifth year at Hogwarts. After their Defense Against the Dark Arts O.W.L. exam, James Potter and Sirius Black torment Snape by the lake, hanging him upside down in the air. Lily Evans tries to stop them, and a humiliated Snape calls her a Mudblood. Snape catches Harry inside the memory, drags him out, and ends their lessons for good. For Harry, the worst part is realizing his father could be a bully, which leaves him questioning everything he believed about James.
