The Trailer at a Glance
- Released: September 2, 2026, the day after Back to Hogwarts Day
- Premiere: December 25, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max
- Season 1: Eight episodes adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
- Key cast seen in the trailer: Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Alastair Stout (Ron), Arabella Stanton (Hermione), John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (McGonagall), Paapa Essiedu (Snape), Nick Frost (Hagrid), and Luke Thallon (Quirrell)
Arriving at Hogwarts
The trailer opens with Hagrid waiting for the Hogwarts Express and a look inside the Great Hall. The first thing the panel noticed was what you don’t hear. Andrew pointed out, “They’ve avoided Hedwig’s theme. Kind of a bit of a surprise, but I still think it’s going to be in the show.” Laura agreed: “There’s no way they won’t pay homage to it,” though she suspects it could be “very subtle at certain points.”
The Great Hall has a look that reminded Andrew of the Hogwarts Legacy video game, but it was the floor that got everyone talking. Miranda said the white tiles look “like a bathroom floor to me,” and Micah had a theory: the Great Hall set may double as the bathroom where the trio fights the troll, which would explain the matching floor.
Next, Hermione bursts onto the train asking the boys whether they’ve done the summer reading. Laura noted that, “per the book canon, there wasn’t” any assigned reading, but Hermione read her textbooks anyway because “she wanted to know what she was getting into.” Miranda offered a fun explanation for the line: “Maybe she got the book list and just assumed that it was the summer reading.” Micah thinks it fits her perfectly, since “she’s entering a whole new world, not just a whole new school.”
We also see Ron receive his Hogwarts letter at the Burrow, surrounded by his brothers, including Percy. Fans online noticed that Ron’s letter looks smaller than Harry’s, which Laura called “a nice touch.” Miranda had a clever theory: Harry’s letter “has to blend in with the Muggle post,” so the school may use different envelopes for letters delivered by owl.
The Sorting Ceremony
During the Sorting, we get our first look at Quirrell from behind, and his headwear is not the tall purple turban fans remember from the films. Andrew called it “way flatter compared to what we see in the movie.” Laura recalled that in the book, Quirrell doesn’t wear a turban when Harry meets him at the Leaky Cauldron, but does by the time he arrives at Hogwarts, and Miranda confirmed it. Laura is curious why the show changed the look.
Then comes the moment straight from the book: Harry under the Sorting Hat, whispering “Not Slytherin,” before being placed in Gryffindor. Andrew was won over by John Lithgow: “I just loved Dumbledore in this trailer,” and Miranda agreed, “I think he’s great.” Andrew especially loved Dumbledore’s excitement as he welcomes everyone to a new year at Hogwarts.
One line in this section stood out: a student saying the Sorting decides their entire future. Laura sees it as the show taking advantage of knowing how the whole story ends, which lets the writers “plant little Easter eggs” early. Listeners in the MuggleCast Discord think the line might belong to Lavender Brown, which Laura agreed sounds like something she would say.
The feast also gets a cameo. Andrew loved how the food simply appears, calling it “quirky and weird, and that’s Hogwarts,” while Laura reminded everyone of the darker truth behind the meal: “We just won’t find out for another few years that this is the result of slavery.”
First Days of School
One of the trailer’s breakout moments belongs to Seamus Finnigan, who greets the boys with an excited “Big day, lads. How are we feeling?” Andrew couldn’t get enough: “He is so cute. Oh God, so cute. He’s so energized.” Micah thinks Seamus could become a fan favorite. The panel debated what the big day could be. Miranda guessed the first flying lesson, Laura wondered about the first day of classes, and Andrew spotted what looked like Quidditch pajamas.
The trailer also shows Neville with his head buried under a pillow and Trevor perched on top, which Laura called relatable: “That’s me in the morning.” We get a peek at Harry’s class schedule, a Herbology classroom, and Harry and Ron having a pillow fight in the Gryffindor dormitory.
Behind Ron in that pillow fight is a real West Ham football poster from the early 1990s. As Andrew noted, Dean Thomas is the West Ham fan in the books, and Miranda tied it to Dean’s storyline in Deathly Hallows, when he goes on the run because he can’t prove his parentage. Andrew called it another example of “loyalty to the books in the details.”
In McGonagall’s classroom, Harry struggles with a matchstick, and Andrew pointed out, “That is their first lesson.” In the book, the first Transfiguration lesson has the students trying to turn a match into a needle. It’s here that Harry admits that everyone thinks he’s a great wizard, but he doesn’t really know anything.
Snape, Quidditch, and Chosen Family
Snape gets one of the trailer’s most memorable lines, telling Harry he hopes he shows some talent at Quidditch since he certainly hasn’t shown any in class. Laura made clear she thinks Paapa Essiedu is a fantastic casting choice, but said she was “a little concerned that Snape is too attractive,” since the books describe him so unflatteringly. Andrew also noticed this Snape isn’t really sneering the way he does on the page. Miranda loved the delivery, calling it a “new interpretation” of the character, and Laura agreed his nastiness may come through in his behavior rather than his looks.
The Quidditch shots show Draco standing right behind Ron in the stands, which Andrew said is “straight out of the book,” and Harry chasing the Snitch. Micah pointed out that we still haven’t seen much of Hogwarts from the outside, and Andrew had expected a big castle reveal on Back to Hogwarts Day that never came.
Hagrid delivers what might be the season’s theme, saying that family is more than just blood. Andrew thinks chosen family will run through the whole season, “if not the entire series,” as Harry finds his place. We also see Hermione bringing Dean’s Gryffindor banner to life for a match, which Laura called “something else lifted straight from the books.”
Mysteries in the Castle
The trailer’s second half leans into the adventure. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville sneak through the castle at night toward Fluffy, and Micah was quick to connect the dots: “Given they’re in their pajamas, we’re going to get the midnight duel, which is how they initially come across Fluffy.” Andrew was happy to see Neville included, just like in the book.
A shot of two wizards lighting up a bridge with their wands had some fans guessing Lily and James, but Andrew thinks it’s more likely “two wizards who are celebrating the fall of Voldemort,” the celebrations Vernon notices at the start of the book. Miranda summed it up: “I don’t know who it is, but I love the way the magic looks.”
Dumbledore tells McGonagall that they can’t protect the children, they can only prepare them. Andrew asked whether that line is “teeing up basically the rest of the series,” and Micah agreed it is.
We also get Harry at the Mirror of Erised, a hunched figure with a lantern that Micah suspects is Filch in the trophy room, and Hermione warning that anything could be lurking behind any door in this place. Laura thinks the show may step outside Harry’s point of view, maybe even showing the girls’ dormitory, while Miranda thinks Hermione’s line comes after the trio stumbles onto Fluffy.
Then there’s the troll, which looks very different from the movie version. Andrew said it looks “fresh out of the upside down,” Laura said, “it looks scary. I like it,” and Miranda added that it felt very TV 14 to her.
Finally, a hooded figure appears near what might be Hagrid’s hut. Micah wondered whether it’s the stranger who gives Hagrid the dragon egg, possibly Quirrell in disguise, while listeners suggested Voldemort himself, perhaps arriving at Godric’s Hollow. Miranda thinks the show could use a flashback when Hagrid tells Harry what happened to his parents.
The Final Challenges and Hermione’s Big Moment
The trailer saves some of the best for last: Hermione above the trapdoor, Ron in the giant chess game, and Harry facing what looks like Quirrell in a firelit chamber. Laura asked whether Ron will get his iconic sacrifice moment, and Andrew had no doubt: “Oh yeah, you 100%, 100%.”
It all ends with Hermione exasperated at the boys: “Oh, come on! Don’t you two read?” Andrew called it “perfect,” and thinks it was clearly picked to please the internet, just like the first teaser ended on Ron’s reaction to meeting Harry. Micah agreed: the last trailer ended by showing off Ron’s character, and this one ends by showing off Hermione’s.
Some fans online have complained that the trailer looks too dark, but Laura disagreed: “I actually think it’s pretty colorful.” She also loved seeing the students in their school uniforms even outside of class, and both she and Andrew hope the show keeps that up.
Details You Might Have Missed
- The Great Hall floor tiles appear to match the bathroom where the troll attacks.
- Ron’s Hogwarts letter is smaller than Harry’s, possibly because it was delivered by owl instead of the Muggle post.
- Quirrell’s headwear is much flatter than the turban in the films.
- The West Ham poster in the dormitory is a real poster from the early 1990s, and Dean is the West Ham fan in the books.
- Neville is with the trio on the way to Fluffy, as he is in the book.
- The house points hourglasses glow brightly against the darker Great Hall.
- Students stay in uniform outside the classroom, including during the chess game.
Our Predictions for the Series
- Andrew: Hedwig’s theme will still make it into the show, and chosen family will be a theme of the whole series.
- Laura: The show will step outside Harry’s point of view, and her dream opening would be Snape overhearing the prophecy, an idea Micah raised.
- Micah: Seamus will become a fan favorite, and the hooded figure could be Quirrell in disguise.
- Miranda: Hagrid’s story about Harry’s parents could be shown as a flashback.
- Miranda: We’re due at least one more trailer before the premiere.
Producer David Heyman has described the series as “the books plus,” and Andrew thinks that’s a strong hint the show will go beyond what’s on the page, with eight hours of story to fill instead of a single film.
Back to Hogwarts Day: A Missed Opportunity
The trailer dropped the day after Back to Hogwarts Day, which left the panel scratching their heads. The roughly 45 minute Back to Hogwarts special instead featured announcements like a Harry Potter float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, new products at Target, a tease of LEGO sets based on the TV series, a new Sorting Hat experience on HarryPotter.com, and a free hat in Hogwarts Legacy. Andrew didn’t hold back: “it was one giant ad,” and he said he felt played watching it. With the TV show being what everyone actually cares about, the panel thinks Warner Bros. missed a chance to make the day a real event.
